Nathan Fischer’s Pride, Pedagogy and Performance:
Getaran Jiwa, Variations on a Malaysian Song op. 125, by John Duarte

This paper was written after I had read Nathan Fischer’s Pride, Pedagogy and Performance which I had found on the net on 26 August 2015 and set about writing this paper on 30 August. I then completed this paper and sent it to the Chief Editor, Dr Jean Penny of Malaysian Music Journal, Fakulti Muzik dan Seni Persembahan Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris on 15 September 2015.

I had expected my article to have been published in the Malaysian Music Journal in the December issue but in my later emails I discovered that Dr Jean Perry had resigned and no longer worked at UPSI. I then wrote to the new Chief Editor, Dr Clare Chan who asked me to resend the article to her, which I  did. Once again I had expected my article to appear in the June 2016 issue but it did not. I have emailed to Dr Chan twice after her last email to me dated 12 Jan 2016 in which she wrote:  “I will discuss this with the other editors. Do you mind resending me your article?” I have not heard from her since… Sensing their reluctance to publish my contentious article, I urged Dr Chan to publish my paper for the integrity of Malaysian Music Journal…

Sadly, I believe that Malaysian Music Journal will not be publishing my article and so I will present it here. Please click here to read the paper or go to www.simoncheong.com to read the paper. I would ask those interested to visit Malaysian Music Journal http://mmj.upsi.edu.my/ for Nathan Fischer’s article in MMJ Vol 3 No 2.

I will state that my article is not written with malice although I was angry at first for its poor presentation but more importantly, it is intended to set the facts right despite the fact that it may offend people.
